Kiwiana’s Digital Leadership Journey- Yours to Take

Kiwiana Ngabung Head of Digital
Starting Out on Her Digital Journey

Kiwiana’s digital leadership journey at SNS Tech began when she joined as a social media and communications specialist. Over time, her role evolved into a transformative leadership position as Head of Digital.

“When I first started, I was focused on helping our internal teams and building the company’s reputation, I never imagined I’d eventually have my own team to support both internal teams and our growing client base,” she reflects.

First Big Challenge

Her first official project as part of the Digital department was to manage social media for Reelae. The social media task was straightforward to her; the challenging part she found was setting up the department’s services and pricing items.

“As a one-person department at the time, I handled everything from creating the strategy and content plans to managing engagement on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. It was a great opportunity to gain exposure for the Reelae brand within the PNG audience.”

Facing Setbacks

But the path was far from smooth. The transition into client-facing digital work had its challenge too.

“Ironically, the biggest challenge for me was learning how to communicate clearly with clients. I had one client where I had to explain our work and justify the branding decisions we made for their program. The challenge was persuading them that our approach was for their benefit.”

That meeting didn’t go as well as she had hoped.

“I felt like a failure afterward. I remember walking out of that room with my confidence shaken, questioning if I was really cut out for this.”

Turning Point

Yet, it was in that low moment that Kiwiana found her turning point. “That experience pushed me to improve my communication skills. I ended up joining a club to learn and practice. Even though I still clench my jaw when I think about that meeting, it was the perfect push I needed to realize I had to do more to improve my communication skills.”

Instead of letting that setback stop her, she used it as a springboard for growth. Ultimately, it was her sense of responsibility and purpose that kept her going.

“It’s not just about posting online. It is about building something bigger than yourself. It’s about impact.”

Kiwiana believes in the power of digital storytelling to connect people and inspire change.

“I wish more people understood that it’s not as simple as it seems. While it’s easy to set up a social media page, the information shared on it should adhere to certain standards and ethical guidelines for maximum impact.”

Leading with Purpose

As she stepped into leadership, Kiwiana’s vision grew. “My vision is to transform our digital team into a fully functional department with specialists in every key area: digital communications and creative design to search engine optimization and digital marketing. But beyond building a team, the focus is also on nurturing talent, which is a culture already embedded in SNS Tech. And I hope to see these roles filled by young passionate Papua New Guineans who are willing and ready to make a positive impact through our work.”

Words of Advice

Her vision comes from her own experiences, and she’s got some practical advice for anyone starting out. It’s quite simple:

“Speak up. Don’t be timid or afraid to share your ideas, because having the courage to use your voice will get you far. Also, your attitude is crucial. Don’t feel like the world or the people around you owe you anything. When you have that mindset, you’re bound to get easily disappointed and frustrated.”

It’s a perspective she’s used to navigate her own journey. If her career were a movie, Kiwiana said she’d title it ‘Yours to Take’.

“I’d say it best represents my belief that this journey was meant for me. It may not have been clear at the beginning, but every place I’ve been, every person I’ve crossed paths with, and every skill I’ve learned was all part of a path that was mine to take.”

Personal Inspiration

She credits her father as a huge inspiration, shaping her with his own philosophy of continuous learning.

“My dad is my role model for his work ethics and philosophy of always learning. He wasn’t only a hard worker, he was an honest one, and he always believed in good values. On top of that, he had a strong urge to learn.”

“He’d go out of his way to learn about our interests, even diving into unusual topics like natural remedies, galaxies, and vibrational alignment, Kiwiana Ngabung Head of Digital Departmenttopics far outside his profession. He did this throughout his life, during his career and even after retiring. It’s a trait I truly admire; it makes my heart smile every time I think about it deeply!”

The Journey So Far

Kiwiana’s story is proof that leadership isn’t about titles or positions, it’s about growth, and the courage to keep moving forward, even when the path is uncertain.

“If I want to do better or be great, it’s important to keep learning, whether at work or outside of it. That thought keeps me open to learning. It really is that simple.”

Her journey is a reminder that no matter where you start, with purpose, perseverance, and a willingness to learn, you can create your own path and inspire others to follow.
