Digitisation vs Digitalisation

Is there a difference? Although some use these terms interchangeably, yes there is a difference. In essence, digitisation is converting analog into digital, in other words converting something into bits and bytes. Examples of digitisation are scanning paper documents into a PDF, converting vintage photos into digital photos, and even cassettes into mp3 formats. Digitalisation, on the other hand, is the implementation of technology to enhance processes and models for more productivity, efficiency, and profitability within an organisation. Digitalisation may even rely on digitization. Examples of digitalisation are using the cloud to store files, having a centralised database for customers, and setting up an online shop.

UI vs UX

UX and UI fall under the same umbrella – web design or product development. Some even use these two words interchangeably. But there is a difference. Here is what it is in a nutshell. UX or User Experience refers to the user’s interaction with a product or service. It is more to do with the overall user’s journey. UI or User Interface on the other hand, is the user’s interaction with interfaces and elements such as buttons, widgets, images, etc. UI involves more interfaces, designs and visual layouts. In the product development process UX design usually comes before the UI process.

AR vs VR

AR is short for Augmented Reality. As the name suggests, AR “augments” or adds virtual elements to the physical world. It is a blend of digital and physical elements. Perfect examples of this would be Snapchat filters, Pokemon Go, or even Zoom backgrounds. VR on the other hand, is a completely computer-generated simulated world. Examples of VR applications are games like Minecraft VR and Fortnite, as well as in the medical industry in other parts of the world, medical students use VR to practice procedures. Since the COVID-19 pandemic there has been an increase in the use of AR and VR, especially in enterprises in various industries such as health, education and tourism. They are powerful tools for the convenience of customers, allowing customers to try new products and can also serve as assistive tools for persons with disability.
